computer problem?

I have a compaq presario v2000 with an ATI Radeon Graphics card and an AMD mobile processer. I upgraded my RAM about 2 weeks ago and about 3 days ago i started having this problem. After about 15 min. after i boot up my computer my monitor gets blurry for lack of a better word and my computer locks up. I hold the power button until it turns off and then when i restart its fine for another 15 min. I have done a system restore and hardrive scan. Nothing has helped. I have also done a spyware scan with spybot and i removed all the spyware/adware from it. I have nortan antivirus and i cant keep my computer up long enouph for a full scan. Any suggestions? (i would prefer to not format my hardrive)
Yes, It is recognizing the extra RAM
I have thought of the fan thing and it is running. (it could be too slow and my computer is still overheating) right before my computer does the lock up thing the fan gets really loud like its working really hard even if im not doing anything. I have the right RAM becuase I asked compaq reps on what exactly i need and thats what i bought. you know when you install new RAM its supposed to do the update thing and install the RAM? Well mine didnt even install and i didnt think anything about it. but i had 256 and now when i go inot my BIOS it says that i have 1024 so it is working. Could it maybe be a virus?

It almost sounds like you purchased the wrong RAM card for your computer. One thing you might try is de-installing and removing your new RAM card and then going to a nice site called the BELARC adviser to give your computer an audit of all your hardware and software details. Download this software and perform the audit and then print it out. It will provide you details of your motherboard, hard drives, software, MS updates, and so on. Print this out and either take this to a computer technician or do some research on the Internet for compatible RAM upgrades with your computer. I know there’s another site out their for RAM upgrades too but I do not recall the name of this site (like the BELARC Adviser, it scans your computer and tells you which RAM cards are compatible or if your computer can even be upgraded).
