Bay Area Vision Meeting: Unsupervised Feature Learning and Deep Learning

Bay Area Vision Meeting (more info below) Unsupervised Feature Learning and Deep Learning Presented by Andrew Ng March 7, 2011 ABSTRACT Despite machine learning’s numerous successes, applying machine learning to a new problem usually means spending a long time hand-designing the input representation for that specific problem. This is true for applications in vision, audio, text/NLP, and other problems. To address this, researchers have recently developed “unsupervised feature learning” and “deep learning” algorithms that can automatically learn feature representations from unlabeled data, thus bypassing much of this time-consuming engineering. Building on such ideas as sparse coding and deep belief networks, these algorithms can exploit large amounts of unlabeled data (which is cheap and easy to obtain) to learn a good feature representation. These methods have also surpassed the previous state-of-the-art on a number of problems in vision, audio, and text. In this talk, I describe some of the key ideas behind unsupervised feature learning and deep learning, describe a few algorithms, and present case studies pertaining. The Bay Area Vision Meeting (BAVM) is an informal gathering (without a printed proceedings) of academic and industry researchers with interest in computer vision and related areas. The goal is to build community among vision researchers in the San Francisco Bay Area, however, visitors and travelers from afar are also encouraged to attend and present. New

16-bit ALU in minecraft

This is the first part of a planned 16-bit computer that will run entirely in minecraft. That computer will be “Hack” compatible, which is to say that it’ll run code meant for the Hack machine described in The Elements of Computing Systems (a fantastic book that you should look up if you are at all interested in how computers work. Its website is www.idc.ac.il ). Some more info: The design was drawn up in a program called Redstone Simulator (does what it says on the tin), which was written by Baezon on the Minecraft Forums www.minecraftforum.net MCEdit ( minecraftforums.net ) was used to help clear off space and import the design into minecraft. Hours of experimenting with prototypes, modifications to the design, and debugging took place in the game itself, however. This project is far from over. Memory, here I come…

Alexander Robotnick – Computer Sourire

1983 Italo Disco www.robotnick.it www.youtube.com/mauriziodami Bio The alias of jazz keyboard player and vocalist Maurizio Dami, Alexander Robotnick existed for several years during the mid-’80s as an Italian synth-pop/disco crossover for the Italian label Materiali Sonori. Robotnick enjoyed a healthy fan base far beyond Europe, however, as thousands of import copies of the single “Problèmes d’Amour” ended up influencing many later house and techno pioneers in Chicago and Detroit. Dami, who began his musical career during the early ’80s with visions of being an electronic cabaret singer, bought two Roland synthesizers (the seminal TR-808 and TB-303) to begin recording. Convinced by Materiali Sonori’s Giampiero Bigazzi to move into the still fertile Italian disco scene to score a quick hit, Dami recorded “Problèmes d’Amour” and released the single on the Materiali Sonori subsidiary Fuzz Dance in 1983. It became quite an import hit in America’s underground club scene, and sparked the mini-LP Ce N’est Qu’un Début that same year. Additional singles like “Computer Sourire” and “C’Est La Vie” appeared on Fuzz Dance during the mid-’80s, but Dami had already moved on by then, later recording under his own name and as GMM, then playing with the ethno-ambient band Masala in the 1990s.

How to connect a TV to computer, HDTV to PC or laptop

Parts used: jasonrj.net I explain the best way to connect your desktop or laptop computer to your HDTV. This will not work with a standard definition TV. I choose the HDMI cable method because it is the absolute best way to do this when concerned with picture quality. I use a DVI to HDMI converter but a video card with a built in HDMI port is even better. Please note that just about any computer is capable of doing this but if the video card is not powerful enough you may see choppy video on the TV as a result. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON EXPENSIVE HDMI CABLES!!!! The cheap cables are EXACTLY as good as the ridiculously expensive ones. This is a proven fact that I find hilarious people try to argue: www.mint.com www.engadget.com gizmodo.com

if your system has a speaker installed in the case – not like desktop speakers, but one that beeps when you boot – that beep is a code telling you what’s going on with the system.

likely, you’ve got an issue with one of two things. either the cpu died (which is a decent amount of cash to replace) or the ram is fried (which isn’t). if you know anything about computers, try booting without the cpu installed. if you can get to the bios, it’s the cpu. another way of knowing what’s up is whether or not the cd/dvd drives spin up on boot…if they don’t, it’s the cpu that’s dead. if they do spin up, your ram is probably toast.

when and if you replace things, blow out your case with some compressed air. it probably overheated.

From Apollo to RocketMavericks Civilian Aerospace.

Tom and Rob came by with the latest flight avionics which we will be testing this summer. Those are the sections in blue – with RF transmission of GPS and remote pad operations (so rocket activation and setup can all be done wirelessly from a safe distance).

RocketMavericks’ new website just launched (with some of my photos and video, and some professional stuff too =)

In contrast to the multi-GB SD card in each flight computer, the white cube in the background is a few kB of core memory from Apollo. Those cores still contain a portion of the Saturn V flight program.

It’s going to be a crazy summer. Several hundred pounds of propellant mixed. 3 airframes with 4 engines each, ready to go Mach 3… to sample the biome of the stratosphere and beyond.
